From cagione + -are or less likely from a Vulgar Latin *occāsionāre, from Latin occāsiāre. Cf. also accagionare, possibly from a root *accāsionāre. Compare Old French achoisoner, Romanian cășuna, cf. also Spanish ocasionar.
