Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بوراغان (burağan, “whirlwind, tornado”) either from bur- (“to twist”) + -ağan (“habitual suffix”), or derived from Proto-Turkic *bora- (“north wind; to snow heavily”), the same root of bora (“squall”).
