Etymology
Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic болꙗринъ (boljarinŭ, “boyar”), Serbo-Croatian boljar (“boyar”) and Bulgarian боляр (boljar, “boyar”). Ultimately from Bulgar.[1][2] The adjective, a derivate of buj, was likely influenced by the Slavic word.
