From brem (broom (plant)) + raap (turnip), a meronymical name deriving from the plant grote bremraap (Orobanche rapum-genistae), which parasitizes on broom plants. Compare the Latin name of the latter species (rapum meaning "turnip" and genista meaning "broom") and English broomrape.
