Etymology

From Occitan botarga or Italian bottarga (a type of large sausage, wide breeches), from Arabic بطارخ (buṭariḫ), from Coptic ⲟⲩⲧⲁⲣⲁⲭⲟⲛ (outarakhon), from Byzantine Byzantine Greek ᾠοτάριχον (ōiotárikhon) = ᾠόν (ōión, egg) + τάριχον (tárikhon, pickled fish) (compare αβγοτάραχο (avgotáracho)). Related to Italian bottarga, French boutargue.
