Etymology

Calque of German Blockflöte, from blokk +‎ fløyte. Cognate with Danish blokfløjte (whence also Greenlandic blokfløjte), Dutch blokfluit, Swedish blockflöjt and Icelandic blokkflauta.

In other parts of the country, different names are sometimes used. These include sjøfløyte, meaning sea flute (most common in the Telemark disctrict) and tyskfløyte or tysfløyte, meaning German -or silent flute (most common in Gudbrandsdalen and in Western Norway).
