From Old Cornish bliþen, from Proto-Celtic *blēdanī (year), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd- (pale), though the semantic connection is weak.[1] See also Lithuanian blaĩvas (whitish, blue, sober), Proto-West Germanic *blait, Albanian blehurë.

Celtic cognates include Welsh blwydd, Breton blizenn, Old Irish blíadain, Cornish bloth, Breton bloaz; Old Breton blened, Welsh blynedd.
