Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *bʰéreti (“to be carrying”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (“to carry”). Akin to Latvian bḕrt, Old High German beran (“carry”), Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (bairan), Latin ferre, Ancient Greek φέρειν (phérein), Russian беременная (beremennaja, “pregnant”).
