Etymology
From Old Galician-Portuguese barvacãa (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Old French barbacane, of uncertain origin: compare English barbican, Arabic بَرْبَخ (barbaḵ, “aqueduct, sewer”), and Persian بابخانه (bâb-xâne, “gatehouse”). Cognate with Portuguese barbacã.
