Etymology

bank (“bank”) +‎ syariah (“sharia”). One of earliest usage found in Decree of the Board of Directors of Bank Indonesia Number 32/34/KEP/DIR, which passed in 1999. The term was short form of bank umum berdasarkan prinsip syariah.
