bagāts
Latvian
Etymology
A pre-13th-century borrowing from Old East Slavic богатыи (bogatyi) (cf. Russian бога́тый (bogátyj, “rich”)) or from Belarusian бага́ты (baháty, “rich”), both from the same stem as Old Church Slavonic богъ (bogŭ, “happiness; abundance, riches; god”), whence also its opposite nabags (“poor”) (q.v.).[1] Compare Lithuanian bagótas (“rich”), also a Slavic borrowing.
