Unknown and disputed. Possibly of an eastern, but pre-Turkish origin (e.g. Cuman, other Turkic, or perhaps Iranian). Has cognates in each of the languages surrounding Romania. Also found in Aromanian as baci. May alternatively be a native, pre-Roman substrate word.[1]

Possibly from Albanian bac.
