From Proto-Turkic *bütün, a derivation of *büt- (to end, accomplish; to create, build; to heal; to grow, ripen), whence also Azerbaijani bütöv (whole). Cognate with Turkish bütün, Crimean Tatar bütün, Turkmen bütin, Tatar бөтен (böten), Bashkir бөтөн (bötön), Kyrgyz бүтүн (bütün), Uzbek butun, Karachay-Balkar бютеу (bütew), Yakut бүттүүн (büttüün), Chuvash пӗтӗм (pĕtĕm).
