Etymology

Inherited from Latin arēna. Compare Italian arena, rena, Sicilian rina, Portuguese areia, Aromanian arinã. Now a largely regional term and mostly replaced by nisip, a Slavic borrowing. Compare arenă, a borrowed doublet.
