From Ancient Greek ἀρχαιολογία (arkhaiología, “antiquarian lore, ancient legends, history”), from ἀρχαῖος (arkhaîos, “primal, old, ancient”) and λόγος (lógos, “speech, oration, study”). It contains the suffix -ija.
