From a Vulgar Latin root *ammūtīre, itself either from Latin mūtus or from obmūtēscere, present active infinitive of obmūtēscō; alternatively from the variant form, from *mutīre < mūtēscere, or simply derived from mut. Compare Aromanian amutsãscu, amutsãri, Italian ammutire.
