altyn

English

Etymology

Borrowed from Russian алты́н (altýn), either from Tatar алты (altı, six), referring to six dengas (six half-kopeks), or from Tatar алтын (altın, gold). These small coins were never minted in gold; however, compare the semantic evolution of Latin solidus from a Roman gold coin to a medieval silver shilling.
