Etymology

First attested in Buzuku as engjënonj with a prothetic (e)n-, then variously attested as angjinonj (Budi), me ngjinuem (Bardhi), me anjënuem (Kuvendi i Arbënit). Borrowed from Latin ieiūnō (to fast).[1] While Topalli argues that the initial a- derives from an interrogative particle, Orel suggests a derivation from Vulgar Latin *adjūnāre from the same source, comparing it to Romanian ajuna (to fast).[2] Ultimately a doublet of ngjëroj.
