From Proto-Semitic *ʔaḫwat- (“sister”). Equivalent to 𒋀 (aḫum, “brother”) + -𒀀𒌈 (-atum, feminine suffix). Cognate with Arabic أُخْت (ʔuḵt) and Biblical Hebrew אָחוֹת (ʔɔḥóṯ).
