Zunderdorp
Dutch
Etymology
Potentially attested as zosenerdorp in 1342, attested with certainty as sunderdorp in 1371. If the oldest attestation refers to the current settlement, a derivation from an otherwise unknown toponym *Zosen and Middle Dutch dorp (“farmstead, village, settlement”) is possible. *Zosen may derive in turn from the dative plural form of an ancient hydronym. If only the later attestations refer to the current settlement, a derivation from a compound of Middle Dutch zonder (“separate, split-off”) and dorp is possible. Compare for the potential older attestations Soest and for the younger attestations Zonderwijk.
