Etymology
An old Germanic or Gaulish word for a watercourse. Zenne, Sinne and Seine are derivatives that can be found as names of Belgian and French rivers, but also in the original name of the municipality of Zonnebeke as Sinnebeche. French speakers call the Belgian river Zenne the Senne and a tributary is the Senette. A more distant relative would be the Dutch river Zaan.
