Zelder
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as sellar in 1357. Compound derived from an unclear first element and laar (“intensively cultivated forest”). The first element has been variously interpreted as a contraction of Middle Dutch seer (“sick, ill”) or sere, sel (“hall house”) and Proto-Germanic *salah (“willow”).
