Zamboanga

English

Zamboanga City, as illustrated in the Velarde Map (1734)

Etymology

From Spanish Zamboanga, from Central Sama Samboangan (mooring place) from samboang (mooring pole) + -an (place marker suffix), as attested in the Velarde Map (1734). A popular folk etymology may also attribute it to either Indonesian jambangan (flower garden) or Malay jambangan (flower garden) or Tausug jambangan (flower garden) from jambang (flower pot) + -an (place marker suffix), but this name has never been attested in any historical records prior to the 1960s with the place being attested usually instead as "Samboangan".[1]

Zamboanga

  1. Zamboanga City (a city in the Philippines)
  2. Any of the three provinces of the Zamboanga Peninsula
  3. Zamboanga peninsula (a peninsula in the Philippines)
  4. Province of Zamboanga (a former province of the Philippines)
  5. The Republic of Zamboanga, a short-lived revolutionary republic, founded after the collapse of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, existing between May and November 1899.
