Etymology
Derived from Russian Ярило (Jarilo), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *jaro (“spring”) or Proto-Slavic *jarъ (“strong, fierce”). It is related to Old East Slavic ярилой (jariloj), a straw effigy used by the ancient Slavs during the festival of Kupala to expel evil spirits.
