Etymology

Derived from Russian Ярило (Jarilo), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *jaro (spring) or Proto-Slavic *jarъ (strong, fierce). It is related to Old East Slavic ярилой (jariloj), a straw effigy used by the ancient Slavs during the festival of Kupala to expel evil spirits.
