Woezik
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in wonseke in 1196. Etymology unknown. If the earliest attestation is correct, it is possible that the ancient suffix Proto-Germanic *-ikja- is present in the toponym. It is also possible that the first element of the toponym is Old Dutch Wunso (“a personal name”) or Middle Dutch woes (“sludge, goo”). Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Geverik, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik and Fellerich. Formerly an independent village.
