Winthagen

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as den hove te winthagen in 1386. Potentially derived from windhaag (hedge meant do defend a building against gusts of wind). However, it is possible that the toponym is a compound of Middle Dutch Windo (a personal name) or Wijnand and haag (fence, enclosed area, homestead). Compare Hilleshagen, Wolfhaag and Wolfhagen.
