First attested as uuerken [read: uuerkendia] in 918-948. Compound of an ancient hydronym derived from Proto-Germanic *werk- (“twist, turn”) suffixed with the hydronymic suffix *-nd- and the dative plural form of Old Dutch hof (“farmstead, homestead”).
