First attested as vrilechoven in 1320. Potentially a compound of either Old Dutch Vrilo (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- or Middle Dutch Vrilinc (“a personal name”) and the dative plural form of hof (“homestead, farmstead”).
