Etymology
The island is first attested as vlielant in 1414 or 1415. Its name derives from a compound of the hydronym Vlie and land (“land”). Compare Flevoland. See also West Frisian Flylân.
The hamlet is first attested as vlieland in 1317. Its name derives from Middle Dutch vlietland (“low-lying land subject to flooding”).
