Upper Franconian
English
Etymology
Calque of German Oberfränkisch.
Proper noun
- one of four main subgroups of the Upper German dialects; spoken in the region of Franconia in northern Bavaria as well as some adjacent parts of Germany
- 1983, C.A.M. Noble, Modern German Dialects, page 59f:
- The North Upper German area (Nordoberdeutsch) is like a wedge pushing the Middle German area northwards. It includes the two High or Upper Franconian (Hochfränkisch, Oberfränkisch) dialects known as South Franconian and East Franconian (Südfränkisch; Ostfränkisch) as well as the dialect of North Bavarian (Nordbairisch).
Usage notes
- Note that Upper Franconian is in no way restricted to the Bavarian subregion of Upper Franconia (Oberfranken). The linguistic term refers to the historic Franks, not the modern region.
