Etymology
First attested as tulde in 1289. Of uncertain etymology. Perhaps derived from Old Dutch tiulithi (“farmland”), although the short vowel in the oldest attestation makes this etymology problematic. Compare Tiel, Tilburg, Tuil and Tull en 't Waal.
