Etymology

From the name of an area in southern China mentioned by Marco Polo, later put by cartographers in area between Asia and America.

Before or after the Anian Strait was (most probably falsely) rapported found by L. Maldonado, the Tholm-name was moved by the cartographers to the eastern side of this strait, becoming a location in America (together with Bergi and Anian, also from Marco Polo).

In later maps the toponym is moved further, into south-eastern side of Sierra Nevada.
