- As an Americanization of a Germanized Slavic name, from Upper Sorbian starc, Lower Sorbian starc, or Slovene stȃrəc (dialectal stȃrc), all meaning "old man"; ultimately from Proto-Slavic *starьcь (“old man”)
- As a dialectal Bavarian surname, from Starz (“tail”) (see Steiß (“tail, coccyx”))
