Snel en Polanen
Dutch
Etymology
Named after the polders Snel and Polanen. Snel is first attested as Snel in 1615. Polanen is first attested as polanen in 1281-1284. Snel is derived from a contracted compound of Middle Dutch snode (“poor, bad”) and lo (“light forest”). Polanen is derived from Van Polanen (“a noble surname”). The polder was formerly owned by members of the Van Polanen family, the name of which derives from a fiefdom derived from Middle Dutch Polanen (“Poland”).
