Schull
See also: schull
Central Franconian
Alternative forms
- Schol (southernmost Moselle Franconian)
Etymology
The expected outcome of Old High German scuola would be šūl in southern Moselle Franconian, and šōl in northern Moselle Franconian and Ripuarian. The actual vocalism, namely šōl in the very south, šul elsewhere, implies an Old High German form *scōla through (re-)adaptation to Latin schola. This would also explain Luxembourgish Schoul (see there).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ʃul/
