Etymology

Attested as Schapenbout in 1840. Compound of the plural form of schaap (sheep) and dialectal bout (remaining section of a collapsed or destroyed levee). Named for the fact that the inhabitants of the settlement took their sheep to pasture on the remains of the levee.
