Etymology
Cognate roots are extensive throughout Volta-Niger, possibly from a root Proto-Volta-Niger *-bo or Proto-Volta-Niger *-bu. See Proto-Igboid *é-wû, Proto-Edoid *e-bhωɪ (Edo ẹwe, Yekhee eghuẹ, Urhobo ẹvwé), Proto-Ebira *ɛ-bʊ (Ebira evu), Proto-Idomoid *ɛ̀-wū (Idoma ewu), Ukaan ẹ̀wị́, Ayere éwó, and possibly cognate with Akpes ɛ̀bi, Akpes ɛbují, Akpes ɛbʊ. A possible wider distribution likely exists possibly to Proto-Atlantic-Congo, see languages in the larger Volta-Congo branch Ibibio ebot, Proto-Plateau *-buon (2a), Proto-Plateau *ì-bu (2b), and Proto-Plateau *-bwal (3), Khana péé, Baatonum boo, Gur languages like Dagbani bua, Proto-Eastern Oti-Volta *bua-, and Proto-Oti-Volta *bʊː, Ega ɛwɪ, also see Proto-Bantu *mbʊ́dì.
