Proto-Yoruboid
Etymology
Likely derived from a Proto-Volta-Niger source, (which may have not been nasalized), cognates exist in descendants of many fellow proto-languages in the Volta Niger group, see àgbọ̀n. Perhaps from Proto-Volta-Niger *à-gbà. Cognate with Proto-Igboid *à-gbã̀, Fon gbà, Proto Akokoid àŋgbà, Ayere àngbà (“cheek, jaw”), Idoma agba, Proto-Akpes *àkpàŋ (“jaw”), and Proto-Edoid *-gbhamhɪ, perhaps related to Nupe gbakũn (“cheek”).
The possible Benue-Congo cognates Ibibio mban̄, Ahwai akpaal (Ndun), and Ahwai áŋkpàn (Shakara), Proto-Plateau *m̀-báŋ, may suggest a pre-Volta-Niger origin. See potential cognate Proto-Ijoid *ãgbãã
