Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dewh₂- (to fit), whence also *tawjaną (to make, complete). The original meaning was probably "that which is ready (for use)" or "that which is made, produced". Compare *tōlą (tool), from *dowh₂-dʰlom.
