Proto-West Germanic

Etymology

Uncertain; possibly metathesized from Proto-Indo-European *srengʰ-, cognate with Lithuanian snarglýs (snot), Old Irish srennaid (to snore), Ancient Greek ῥέγκω (rhénkō, to snore), Sanskrit शृङ्खाणिका (śṛṅkhāṇikā, snot).

Alternatively, perhaps from earlier *snarrukōn, equivalent to *snarrōn (to buzz, drone, snarl) + *-ukōn.
