Proto-Vietic
Etymology 1
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *cuuʔ.
In most Mường lects, this word has been replaced by a word derived from Chinese 孫 (MC swon) (see Nguyễn Văn Tài's Ngữ âm tiếng Mường qua các phương ngôn ("the Phonetics of the Mường dialects"), pg. 190). For example, the Mường Bi lect has thôn as the chief word for "grandchild", while chảu means "son-in-law". The similar situation is seen with the words "meat" and "clean": Mường lects having nhúc (< 肉 (MC nyuwk)) and quang (< 光 (MC kwang)) or similar forms, while Vietnamese keeps thịt and sạch respectively.
