The Finnic and Saamic words suggest *e in the second syllable, but the Mordvinic forms suggest *pirä. The Finnic and Saamic words suggest *piire, but the Mordvinic forms with e suggest *pire.
Etymology
Sometimes compared with Proto-Mongolic *hergi- (“to go round”), whence Mongolian эргэх (ergex, “to turn”), Buryat эрьехэ (erʹjexe), эрьелдэхэ (erʹjeldexe), Kalmyk эргх (ergx, “to spin, go round”); Evenki хэркэми (hərkəmi, “to tie, bind together”), Manchu ᡥᡝᡵᡤᡳ (hergi, “to wind”); Proto-Indo-European *péri, whence Sanskrit परि (pari), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌 (pairi), Ancient Greek περί (perí, “around”).
