Etymology
- Per Rix (LIV) and Vasmer, possibly related to *reťi (“to speak, to say”), from Proto-Indo-European *rek-. If so, cognate with Sanskrit रचयति (racáyati, “to make, to form, to correct”). Vasmer adds Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (rahnjan, “count”) as an additional cognate. Rix reconstructs the PIE etymon of this verb as iterative *rōk-ye-.
- Vaillant asserts that this verb is a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *rōkijaną (“to care about”), cf. Old Norse rœkja; but Vasmer specifically denies this.
