Etymology
Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pond-éye-ti, causative/iterative from *(s)pend- (“to stretch”). Cognate with Lithuanian spándyti (“to stretch”), German spannen (“to stretch”), Lithuanian spą́stas (“traps”), spę́sti (“to set traps”) (1sg. spéndžiu), Latvian spôsts (“trap, snare”).
