Etymology
From *kõltъ (“club? log? sledgehammer?”) + *-iti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kálˀtas, from the Proto-Balto-Slavic root *kalˀ-. Cognate with Lithuanian káltas (“chisel”), Latvian kal̃ts (“chisel, small hammer”). See *kòlti (“to stab, to sting”) for further etymology.
