Etymology

From *kõltъ (club? log? sledgehammer?) + *-iti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kálˀtas, from the Proto-Balto-Slavic root *kalˀ-. Cognate with Lithuanian káltas (chisel), Latvian kal̃ts (chisel, small hammer). See *kòlti (to stab, to sting) for further etymology.
