Etymology

From *gatъ, *gatь (type of barrier or border) + *-iti, formally a causative-iterative extension of Proto-Balto-Slavic *gā́ˀtei (to go, to proceed), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂- (to go).
