Etymology

Per ESSJa, likely of onomatopoeic origin, probably a dialectal variation of *brъzgati. A similar grade variation is observed in South-Central Slavic *prъskati : Northern Slavic *pryskati (to spray).

Morphologically equivalent of Proto-Slavic *brudъ (mud, dirt) / *brugъ (unattested) + *-skati, ultimately an extension of Proto-Indo-European *bʰrew- (to brew).

*brỳzgati impf (perfective *bryzgnǫti)[1][2]

  1. to sprinkle, to spray, to splatter
