From early *ēdsā, inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ēˀdsāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed-s-eh₂, from *h₁ed- (to eat). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *ēsą (food, carrion) < *h₁ed-s-om, Tocharian B: yetse (skin) < *h₁ed-s-os. Compare Lithuanian ė̃desis (feed) < *h₁ed-es-.
