From Proto-Afroasiatic *mariy- (“wild cat, lion, leopard”). Cognate with Egyptian mꜣj (“lion”) and mjw (“cat”), Alagwa mariy-amo (“wild cat”), Pévé merian (“wild cat, serval”), Ngete mēr (“serval”).
