Perhaps a derivate of Proto-Mon-Khmer *luŋ(h) ~ *luuŋ(h) ~ *ləŋ(h) (to hollow, excavate, bore). According to Sidwell (2006), Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-lawŋ (boat) may be borrowed from this root.
